Back in February my husband Bob lost his job, just like thousands of other hardworking Americans. He's been able to collect unemployment, and, with a bit of financial juggling we're managing ok.
Like most of America we have credit cards, several credit cards, but they all have payment protection, so we got in touch with the card companies and activated the insurance on most of them. After all, thats what we've been paying it for right?
The initial process was simple enough, call them, send in some paperwork, ..... sorted...... Hmmm
With HSBC they freeze the account so that you cant use it while its under paymetn protection. Makes perfect sense, they dont want you getting into further debt. We had one HSBC account that had a credit limit of almost $4000, we couldnt use it now, but that wasnt a problem, it would still be there when things pick up on the work front and we deactivate the payment protection.................. OH NO IT WONT!!!!!!!!!!
HSBC dropped the credit limit the day we activated the payment protection. Dropped it to just $40 above the balance. When we called to question this they said it was due to information on my husbands credit report and had nothing to do with him being unemployed and nothing to do with the fact that he had activated the payment protection. What a load of bull. This happened the same day we activated the payment protection AND my husbands credit score at that time was 720. We had NEVER made a late payment and ALWAYS payed well above the minimum. The only change was my husband had lost his job. HSBC had now screwed us because, on his credit report it shows that the high balance (the highest balance we've had on the card, not the current balance) is $2000 MORE than the credit limit, making it look like the card was OVERLIMIT by $2000..................... What the hell!!!!!!!!
Now, we had a credit card with Wamu for the last 5 year that has recently been taken over by Chase. At the time my husband was laid off there was a zero balance on that card so we didnt need to activate the payment protection. We have since used it, but thats not been a problem, I've been paying it regularly with no trouble.
A couple of weeks ago we got a letter from payment protection regarding payperwork for our other Chase card, we'd already sent in what they were asking for so my husband called them. While he was on the phone the girl said that even tho the ex wamu card had a zero balance at the time he was made unemployed they could activate the payment protection on it now that we've used it, and we can continue to use the card and just pay what we want(if we want) It made sense, we could carry on paying on the balance, but if we hit a tough spot and couldnt find the money to pay it it would be covered, so we agreed to them activating the payment protection.
The lawnmower broke down and the grass is getting long..... what the hell, maybe we should buy a goat! Fortunately my husband and stepson between them are pretty good at fixing things, so today they were going to go get the parts for the mower, we decided it was easier than getting a goat lol.
Time to juggle finances again. So... my husband checked the usable credit card balances (Chase). They had recently sent us a Chase card to replace the old Wamu one and my husband called them to activate it....................... Thats when he flipped out..............
Chase have CANCELLED the old Wamu account......... An account that has been in good standing for 5 years without so much as a late payment on it.
I thought maybe he had put some numbers in wrong in the automatic activation thing over the phone so checked online.... it didnt say it was cancelled..... He called them.....
YES THEY HAVE CANCELLED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The same day we activated the payment protection!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No, said the girl on the end of the phone.... it has nothing to do with activating the payment protection. Its because of information received from a recent check of your credit report....
My husbacd talked to a manager who basically told him they dont care that the account has been in good standing for the last 5 year, or that we pay above the minimum every month ON TIME.
Its just coincedence that it was cancelled when the payment protection was activated, it was cancelled because of his credit report.......
BULLSHIT!!!!!
I went online and pulled all 3 of his credit reports....... there is nothing new on there that is in anyway derogotory, all the little boxes are GREEN for monthly reporting and the little message regarding account status says active and pays on time.............. so WHAT THE HELL!!!!!
The only thing that has changed in the last few months is my husbands employment status, so tell me we havent just been screwed by another major credit card!!!!!!
